  3.     I was both surprised and disappointed to read your item
  4. about London's being the "city of filth" (WORLD, Jan. 30) and
  5. then a letter about dog dirt in Paris (LETTERS, Feb. 20). I live
  6. in Amsterdam, and this has to be the No. 1 European capital for
  7. dog excrement. In a small, overcrowded country with almost 15
  8. million inhabitants, we have more than a million dogs. It is not
  9. unusual to see the tenant of a cramped city apartment taking
  10. two, three or even four dogs for their "walkies." The result is
  11. left on the sidewalks, in the parks and on the banks of the
  12. rivers and canals.
